The years we spent watching Mom’s decline due to Alzheimer’s were full of so much anger, fear, frustration, pain, confusion, exhaustion, grief, and an overwhelming sense of inadequacy.Alzheimer’s is harsh, erratic, unrelenting, unpredictable, disheartening, unforgiving, demoralizing, menacing, and random.

The making of this panel for the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Quilt to Remember became a vital part of my grieving process.It was emotionally difficult to work in black and white, especially because the stark lack of color reinforced the irrevocable changes in our lives. The process allowed me to struggle and cry and, ultimately, move through some of my grief. It was and continues to be a profound journey.

Wow. I am so glad that my paternal grandmother did not suffer through Alzheimers like my mother's mother.
A very moving post. When I first saw the last photo, I thought for a split second that the chair was a giant hand holding the quilt. Kind of fits.
Watching your parent get older and fade is so hard.
