This was my first time to attend a quilt show. What an overwhelming, entirely out of body, sensory overload experience!!So many colors, so many quilts, so many vendors, so many products, so many people . . .
The highlight for me was viewing the inaugural showing of the Forgetting: Piece by Piece exhibit by the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative.
I also took two classes, hauling my machine and gear (without benefit of a rolling case) through the long, long hallways of Nashville’s Gaylord Opryland resort.
Class one was with Scott Mulkin, a doctor from North Carolina. Making Waves involved learning to cut curved half-square triangles without templates. I had purchased and prepared 74 blocks of assorted Christmas fabrics for an almost twin size quilt . . .
Class two was held Saturday morning with Lynda Milligan and Nancy Smith of The Great American Quilt Company. My class project became a 23” x 23” quilt entitled “The Heart of the Matter” which was donated to AAQI as a Little Treasure. (Inspiration for the fused hearts came from this beautiful flower [above] found alongside one of the walkways leading to Opryland from the Opry Mills parking lot.)
We didn’t travel together, but Chris and I found each other while there ~ she purchased her current Nolting longarm “Iris” during the show. [We were a bit giddy ~ this was Chris doing her Vanna-impression next to one of Caryl Bryert Fallert's quilts]
